Navigating the AI Era – Practical Intelligence for ROI and HIM Leaders
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming healthcare, creating new opportunities to improve efficiency, data quality, and operational performance. Yet with a growing number of AI solutions entering the market, many HIM leaders are challenged to distinguish meaningful innovation from hype. This session provides a practical, real-world look at how AI is being applied across Health Information Management, including documentation, coding, quality reporting, data abstraction, and workflow optimization. Attendees will gain insight into how leading organizations are evaluating AI technologies, identifying high-impact use cases, and measuring success through operational and financial outcomes. We’ll also explore key considerations for governance, compliance, data quality, and organizational adoption. Whether you’re beginning your AI journey or expanding existing initiatives, this session will equip you with actionable strategies to make informed decisions, demonstrate return on investment, and confidently lead your organization in the evolving era of AI-driven healthcare.

1.0 – Evolving Topics

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Aligning HI Education with Workforce Realities
This session introduces the Health Information Continuum™, a conceptual framework developed to describe the full scope of health information practice across the lifecycle of health data. Drawing on workforce evidence, an ILHIMA membership survey, and a survey of Illinois HI/HIM program directors, the session examines where HI professionals actually work, how careers move across settings, and how educational programs reflect or fall short of current workforce realities. Attendees will explore practical applications of the continuum for curriculum mapping, career advising, internship development, and CAHIIM-aligned workforce readiness.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the Health Information Continuum™ and the lifecycle of health data it represents across diverse practice settings.
- Examine workforce and educator survey findings that illustrate gaps between HI practice realities and educational exposure.
- Identify transferable HI competencies that span provider, payer, vendor, public health, education, research, and emerging environments.
- Apply the Health Information Continuum™ to at least one area of curriculum design, advising, or program planning.

From Backlog to Breakthrough: How AI-Powered Automation Transforms HIM and Revenue Cycle Operations
Health information and revenue cycle teams are stretched thin—manual processing backlogs, compliance pressure, and staff turnover are eating into margins and clinician satisfaction. This session explores how leading health systems are using AI-powered automation to eliminate bottlenecks, recover millions in lost revenue, and empower staff to focus on higher-value work. You’ll walk through real-world transformations: one health system saved $200,000 in year one through HIM automation; another recovered 2-5% in net revenue by streamlining denial appeals. We’ll cover where AI delivers genuine ROI, how to build the business case for automation, and how to manage the change without losing your team—positioning these tools as elevating roles, not eliminating them.Leave with a framework for identifying quick-win automation opportunities in your organization and the financial model to get board approval.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Identify quick-win automation opportunities in HIM and revenue cycle that deliver measurable ROI within 6-12 months and improve staff satisfaction

- Build a financial business case for automation investments using benchmark metrics (cost per transaction, staff FTE savings, cycle time improvements) that resonate with CFOs and board leadership
- Navigate the change management challenge of introducing automation without losing staff buy-in—positioning these tools as elevating roles, not eliminating jobs
- Evaluate solution providers and implementation approaches to avoid common pitfalls and ensure successful deployment at your organization
