From RUGs to PDPM: The Changing Alphabet of Medicare Skilled Nursing Prospective Payment in Long Term Care

This presentation will address the Medicare payment changes in skilled nursing facilities effective 10/1/19. The current system focuses on the resources required to manage the care of the resident. The new system will utilize ICD-10-CM coding from the Principal Diagnosis to determine part of the payment case mix index as well as base the case mix on the resident’s clinical and social characteristics. The reason for the change will also be addressed. The participants will have an opportunity to walk through the case mix calculation to become more familiar with the complexities of the new system.

Mary Ann P. Leonard, RHIA, RAC-CT owner and operator of Health Information Professionals, a health information management consulting company. Health Information Professionals holds contracts for HIM consulting services with over 100 facilities in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. A graduate of Temple University’s Health Information Management program, Mary Ann has worked as a Medical Records Consultant in long term care for over 3 decades. She has conducted educational programs on various medical records related topics and conducts the medical record portion of the Nursing Home Administration program for the Institute for Continuing Education and Research (ICER) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Harrisburg Area Community College NHA program in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She has presented on a number of HIM related topics for the Pennsylvania Health Information Management Association, the New Jersey Health Information Management Association, the Long Term Care Spring Conference sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association and various other professional associations. She has successfully completed the AANAC Assessment Coordinator certificate program and update. Mary Ann is also active in the Pennsylvania Health Information Management Association and the American Health Information Management Association by holding various positions and membership in the Long Term Care Practice/Continuity of Care Council. She is an AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM trainer. She is a founding and charter member of the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators and has held positions within the Association including Board member, advisor and Committee Chair. She has also held positions with the PHIMA including, but not limited to, Secretary, Education Chair and Conference Chair.
